The New York Motor Vehicle Department is a part of the state government that registers vehicles in New York State and licenses their drivers. This amounts to about 11 million driver licenses and 10.4 million registered vehicles in 2005. There were 390,634 accidents across New York of which 1,915 were fatal in 2005.
